This week, Eli Maraslek, a junior at Boston College and a Clough Center Correspondent, wrote for The Heights, BC’s independent student newspaper.

A Political Science and Philosophy major, Marsalek reflected in a letter to the editor on the 2025 Clough Center Fall Colloquium. Acknowledging that institutional democracy faces challenges, Marsalek noted that the consistent support of citizens ensures that democratic institutions can continue to work. Marsalek pointed to South Korea, for example, where a recent attempted coup was met by strong opposition from the civil society. In the United States and in much of the world, citizens’ persistent engagement in political life helps keep democracy resilient.
