This year, the Clough Center co-sponsored the RestDOC Venice Seminars, which took place at Venice International University on the Island of San Servolo during the last week of May 2025. Focused on the theme of Democracy’s Discontent, the conference consisted of lectures, panel presentations, and student discussions that explored, among other timely topics, political polarization, economic inequality, and authoritarianism.
Clough Center Director Jonathan Laurence, as well as Isaiah Sterrett (Postdoctoral Research Fellow) and Chandra Mallampalli (Senior Research Fellow), were among the presenters, as were many friends of the Clough Center, including Elias Opongo (Hekima College), Karen Barkey (Bard College), and Anina Schwarzenbach (University of Bern). James Parlon, Clough Center Correspondent and Junior Fellow, participated as a student–one of the only undergraduates to do so.
The theme of the conference was inspired by a book with the same title from Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel, who delivered a keynote address.
